To Kuopio by bus or plane or...

25/3/2014

St Henry's Cathedral Parish has booked a bus to and from Kuopio for those who wish to attend the Consecration Mass at St Joseph's Church on Saturday, May 3rd. If you are keen to be part of the festivities but don't feel up to a gruelling day on the parish bus, Marja Huttunen, whose parents live in Kuopio, offers some alternative suggestions.

1) Fly with Finnair (€88)
I've bought direct air tickets from Helsinki to Kuopio (the flight takes 40 min one way) and I paid €88 for the return tickets. There are no cheap alternatives that allow you to go there and back the same day, but if you fly the day before or return the following day, there are deals to be had. (But hurry up, as the prices go up as we approach the date of the Consecration.)

 2) Onnibus (from Helsinki, Turku Jyväskylä etc. A single return from Helsinki €28,80)
Onnibus offers reasonable prices, though same-day returns are again out of the question.
An example schedule by bus would be: departure from Helsinki at 2.30 p.m. on May 2, arrive in Kuopio at 9.15 p.m. (a couple of stops on the way). Return dearture Sunday at 1 p.m., arrive in Helsinki at 7.45 p.m. at a cost of €14,90 each way.

3) Special offer by train
You may get there and back again the same day by train and VR has special offers, so keep checking the site. The train trip takes 4-5 hours each way.

Help with accommodation?

If you need help finding reasonable accommodation in Kuopio, I can lend a hand with that as well, as I do that sort of thing for work all the time, which provides me with the requisite skills and networks.

Happy about St Joseph's Church,
with best regards,
Marja Huttunen

Fides 3/2014 published

"More Catholics than before" proclaims the headline of the statistics item in Fides 3/2014.

City of Helsinki cultural activities

11/3/2014

The City of Helsinki Cultural Office has asked Katolinen.net to spread information about their Kulttuurikaverit  or culture companion programme. The Cultural Office hopes to reach immigrants in particular, but they assure us that all comers are welcome, so do use this service! Information is available in Finnish on the Cultural Office's own Kulttuurikaverit page, but we give the gist of the matter below, so keep reading.

Are you interested in going to a cultural event, but don't feel comfortable going on your own? Or do you not know what type of activities are available in Helsinki? The solution to your problems is a culture companion, i.e. a volunteer who has been trained by the City of Helsinki for the express purpose of helping you out!

A culture companion will provide the company you need, book the tickets and - if need be - even give you a hand to find your way to the event. A culture mate also gives you a chance to improve your Finnish language skills at the same time!

The conversion of the founder of charismatic church in Sweden has caused headlines. Ulf Ekman and his wife Birigtta are leaving the pentecostal church he founded, Livets ord (Word of Life), he announced on Sunday, March 9. They will be received into the Catholic Church later this spring, becoming members of St Lars Parish in Uppsala, Sweden.

St Joseph's a work in progress

6/3/2014

On Saturday May 3rd, 2014, the church acquired late last year in the centre of Kuopio will be consecrated to St. Joseph, becoming the first Catholic Church in modern times in eastern Finland and part of St Olav's Parish.

Much is needed to make it a proper Catholic church: a new High Altar, an Ambo or pulpit, housing for the Tabernacle, a Baptismal font, Holy Water fonts, kneelers for the benches, Confessionals, candle-holders, Consecration Crosses... So if you can contribute, please do so.

Ash Wednesday - the beginning of Lent

5/3/2014

Today is Ash Wednesday, when we mark the beginning of Lent.

Suitable Lenten reading is the Pope's Lenten Message. It is available in English on the Vatican site here.

A translation into Finnish is available in the Diocesan magazine Fides. Go to page 7 in this issue of the magazine (pdf) and share it with your Finnish-speaking friends and acquaintances - or use it to improve your Finnish. For a Swedish version, please go to the Vatican Radio site here.
The theme of this year's Lenten Collection of Caritas Finland is the global campaign to end hunger, One human family - food for all. Find out more by clicking here.
