Finland gets 8th Catholic Parish

20/3/2016

On Saturday, March 19, 2016, on the Feast of St Joseph, Bishop Teemu Sippo SCJ founded the St Joseph's Parish in Kuopio, bringing the number of Catholic parishes in Finland to eight. Father Francisco Garcia was installed as Parish Priest at St Joseph's and father Matthew Azzopardi is a priest in the parish.

For photos from the Bishop's Mass in Kuopio, please click here. The Church of St Joseph was consecrated as a Catholic church on May 3, 2014.

Sunshine and rain on Diocesan Day

18/8/2014

On Saturday, August 16, 2014 the Catholic Diocese of Helsinki celebrated its annual Diocesan Day. The day began with Mass in St Lawrence's Church in Lohja and continued at the Diocese's camp facility of Stella Maris. For photos from the Mass as well as from Stella Maris, please click here.

At two o'clock the programme included a presentation on Blessed Hemming, a 14th-century Bishop of Turku, given in the chapel at Stella Maris. The presentation coincided with a burst of rain and the roof shook from the assault.

'Where we were sitting the roof is no longer waterproof. The rain was making the wall wet and one of the images of the Way of the Cross got wet, as did one of the pews. We took the picture down so it could dry and we put an umbrella over the pew that was getting wet, to protect it,' says Ilona Ennelin who took part in the Diocesan Day celebrations.

The roof of the chapel at Stella Maris is in urgent need of repairs. considering the financial situation in the Diocese, everybody needs to pitch in to make that happen - ideally by contributing work to get the job done. Ilona points out that it was ordinary people who replaced the roof of the Lutheran church of Turnävä some years back.

'There are a lot of skillful people among us Cathoilcis too - we just need to get down to work.' she points out..

Katolinen.net is in complete agreement with Ilona Ennelin. Please get in touch with  your parish and the Diocese: sign up as volunteer helpers! Together we can rescue the chapel at Stella Maris!

On Saturday, May 3rd, the former Lutheran church in Männistö, Kuopio, becama a Catholic church as it was consecrated to St Joseph by Bishop Teemu Sippo SCJ.

Update on May 5, 2014: The local newspaper Savon Sanomat also wrote about the Consecration (in Finnish). You'll find their report here.

To Kuopio by bus or plane or...

25/3/2014

St Henry's Cathedral Parish has booked a bus to and from Kuopio for those who wish to attend the Consecration Mass at St Joseph's Church on Saturday, May 3rd. If you are keen to be part of the festivities but don't feel up to a gruelling day on the parish bus, Marja Huttunen, whose parents live in Kuopio, offers some alternative suggestions.

1) Fly with Finnair (€88)
I've bought direct air tickets from Helsinki to Kuopio (the flight takes 40 min one way) and I paid €88 for the return tickets. There are no cheap alternatives that allow you to go there and back the same day, but if you fly the day before or return the following day, there are deals to be had. (But hurry up, as the prices go up as we approach the date of the Consecration.)

 2) Onnibus (from Helsinki, Turku Jyväskylä etc. A single return from Helsinki €28,80)
Onnibus offers reasonable prices, though same-day returns are again out of the question.
An example schedule by bus would be: departure from Helsinki at 2.30 p.m. on May 2, arrive in Kuopio at 9.15 p.m. (a couple of stops on the way). Return dearture Sunday at 1 p.m., arrive in Helsinki at 7.45 p.m. at a cost of €14,90 each way.

3) Special offer by train
You may get there and back again the same day by train and VR has special offers, so keep checking the site. The train trip takes 4-5 hours each way.

Help with accommodation?

If you need help finding reasonable accommodation in Kuopio, I can lend a hand with that as well, as I do that sort of thing for work all the time, which provides me with the requisite skills and networks.

Happy about St Joseph's Church,
with best regards,
Marja Huttunen

St Joseph's a work in progress

6/3/2014

On Saturday May 3rd, 2014, the church acquired late last year in the centre of Kuopio will be consecrated to St. Joseph, becoming the first Catholic Church in modern times in eastern Finland and part of St Olav's Parish.

Much is needed to make it a proper Catholic church: a new High Altar, an Ambo or pulpit, housing for the Tabernacle, a Baptismal font, Holy Water fonts, kneelers for the benches, Confessionals, candle-holders, Consecration Crosses... So if you can contribute, please do so.

St Joseph's Church to be consecrated in May

16/12/2013

The newly acquired church building in Kuopio will be consecrated a Catholic church on Saturday, May 3rd, 2014 at 1 p.m., Catholic Information Service reports. Mass has already been celebrated at the church in Männistö in Kuopio, but now the date for the consecration of the building. It was already known that the new church would be dedicated to Saint Joseph.

Saint Joseph's Church will be a chapel and part of Saint Olav's in Jyväskylä.

New church in Kuopio will be St Joseph's Church

28/11/2013

There will soon be a Catholic church in Kuopio: on November 27th 2013 the local Evangelical-Lutheran parishes sold the "Old Church" in Männistö to the Catholic Church. The Church is in the district of St. Olav's Parish and for the time being will probably be a Chapel within that Parish. The Church will be dedicated to St. Joseph.

The address of the new Catholic Church in Kuopio is Lönnrotinkatu 24. The date when the Church will be consecrated as a Catholic church has not yet been decided.
