Mother Tekla In Memoriam

4/3/2020

The death has been announced of Mother Tekla Famiglietti on March 3rd 2020 in the House of St Bridget in Rome.

Mother Tekla was Abbess General of the new branch of the Bridgettines, the Order of the Most Holy Saviour, for 37 years, from 1979 until 2016. She was born in 1936 in a village near Naples, and her experience as a small child during World War II led her to enter the convent of St Bridget’s in Rome at the age of 15. Over the years she was to become a legendary figure and was known as one of the most influential women in the Catholic Church of the time, also thanks to her close friendship with Pope St John Paul II.

I lived for many years close to the  House of St Bridget in Rome and I met Mother Tekla on many occasions. I was aware of her decisive contributions not only to the Order (which more than doubled in size during the time she was Abbess General), but also to the whole Church although indeed I did not know their extent.

On March 3rd Signum published a memorial note by Ambassador Fredrik Vahlqvist, chairman of the  Birgittastiftelsen,  Swedish Ambassador to the Holy See from 2002-2008, and a longtime friend of Mother Tekla. The note illustrates Mother Tekla’s activities over and above her tireless work for the Order:  among others,  the promotion of  Ecumenism that created a bridge between Northern Europe and Rome (she even gave the use of a Chapel in the Bridgettine House in Rome to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden); campaigning against the trafficking of women;  achievements in the field of Vatican diplomacy - in primis her contacts with Fidel Castro that led to the resumption of diplomatic ties between Cuba and the Holy See. She undoubtedly contributed to St John Paul II declaring St Bridget as one of the Patron Saints of Europe in 1999.
Finally, a cause she had promoted for many years was fulfilled in June 2016 when Pope Francis canonised the Foundress of the Order of the Most Holy Saviour, St Elizabeth Hesselblad.

Mother Tekla received much recognition for her achievements all over the world, including the awarding of important Decorations by Finland and Sweden.

Our thoughts and prayers are now with the Bridgettine sisters, especially with those that many of us know in Turku and in Rome.

May Mother Tekla rest in peace.

Finnish graphic novel about St Bridget

14/10/2014

Saint Bridget of Sweden is not only the Patron Saint of Europe, she is also the heroine of a newly-published Finnish graphic novel.

The book Pyhän Birgitan perilliset (The Heirs of Saint Bridget) tells the story of Birgitta Birgersdotter and of how the Bridgettine order came to Finland. The book has been published by an association of friends of Finland's present-day Bridgettines called Birgittalaissisarten ystävät ry, so the monies from the book will be spent assisting the sisters at the convent in Turku, Finland.
Want to take a closer look at the images? Click here.

Order your copy now!

The book Pyhän Birgitan perilliset cost EUR 10 + postage if you order it online here (yes, the form is in Finnish, but it simply asks you to fill in your name, e-mail, phone number and tick whether you want one or two copies of the excellent book). If you are in Turku you can purchase your copy directly from the Bridgettine sisters on Ursininkatu 15 and if you're heading for the Helsinki Book Fair the book is available at the Catholic Information Service bookt (6e82).

Blessed Hemming Bake-Off

9/5/2014

The Friends of the Bridgittine Sisters Association, or Birgittalaissirarten Ystävät ry, has launched a competition to find a cake or pastry to celebrate Blessed Hemming. This year is the quincentennial of Bishop Hemming's beatification, so the association feels it's high time the 14th-century Bishop of Turku gets a cake.

The association encourages everybody and anybody to come up with a recipe for a Blessed Hemming Cake. In his lifetime, Bishop Hemming was known for his simple culinary habits, but 500 years on from his beatification, we are looking for something that would took and taste nice on the coffee table. The recipe that wins the competition will be named the Official Cake of the association.

Please send in your recipes to vahatalo(at)iki.fi before midsumer. Do include a photo of your creation as well as an explanation of the connection between the pastry and Blessed Hemming.

The recipes will be tested in the autumn and an impartial jury will select the winner.

Bless your efforts, the Blessed Hemming Bake-off is now officially on!

Christmas Bazaar at St Bridget's on Sunday, Dec. 1

27/11/2013

The Christmas Bazaar t St Bridget's and Blessed Hemming's Parish in Turku is traditionally arranged by the parish youth.

Setting up for the bazaar on the First Sunday of Advent begins on Friday: there is a lot to do in the St Bridget Hall and Parish Hall, but even before that the work has begun to get all the baked goods and delicious foods made. Among other things, you will be able to buy boxes of biscuits (or cookies, if you prefer) made according to a recipe by St Hildegard of Bingen. Hildegard herself stated that her biscuits would cleanse the senses and cause an increase of joy. St Hildegard may have mixed her last batch in the 12th century, but that sounds like a recipe for today!

Of course there are lots of other goodies on offer: food from Vietnam, Poland and Iraq. Ginger snaps by the Knights of Malta have been mentioned, and that's just the beginning. The place to start your preparations for Christmas is the St Bridget Bazaar at Ursininkatu 15 in Turku.
Welcome!

G.A. Perti's Requiem - St Martin's Church, Turku, on Nov 2

17/10/2013

Giacomo Antonio Perti was an Italian composer of the Baroque period and maestro di cappella of San Petronio, the monumental basilica in Bologna. He held the post for an unprecedented 60 years and became the greatest name of the Bologna school.

Giacomo Antonio Perti's Requiem might have been performed during the composer's lifetime, although no indication of any performance has been found. The surviving manuscript is an old copy, and no conclusions regarding performances can be drawn based on it, either. It is therefore quite likely that the performance of the work in Finland is at the same time its first performance in modern times.

The concert will be conducted by Michele Vannelli who is the current maestro di cappella of the basilica of San Petronio and the direct successor of Giacomo Antonio Perti.
